Harrisson for the Tasmanian Field Naturalist’s Club (the lithograph itself based on a thylacine from the1910 photograph of four member thylacine family at Beaumaris Zoo, Hobart). I came across the photograph on a website which identified it as a rare photograph of the thlylacine in the wild. There are (in fact) no such photographs.

The seller described the photo as unlikely to be authentic. The image included Gustav Weindorfer and his dog Flock at Dove Lake, Cradle Mountain, as well as the thylacine. The seller told me he had purchased the photograph several years previously from some people who had a printing business. They had a large framed picture in their shop window, and this image was a print of that. They didn’t know where the original came from. Subsequently I located the thylacine in the photo from a picture taken at the London Zoo.

Scent of a Falling Dark is an exhibition of linocut prints and paintings drawing on historical images of the Tasmanian tiger to explore themes of loss, endangerment and extinction. The exhibition opens at the Moores Contemporary Art Gallery, 46 Henry St, Fremantle, at 6pm 27 April.
