1. Looking over its shoulder
   was a common thing
   without the extension
   of wings.
   Extinction was the order
   of the night and day
   when hunters
   made hay
   while stripes and lines
   were on the grass
   and the decline
   of the last
   of its kind. The rifle bird
   reports and goes
   out of its head
   in the glow
   of light from the past.
   A dugite skeleton
   is a circle of chalk
   on Dorre Island.
